The Lebanon Valley Conservancy has announced that it is now accepting applications for its 2021 Richard H. and Karen R. Light Memorial Scholarship. The $2,500 annual scholarship is given to a local student planning on pursuing a career in environmental sciences.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is April 1, 2021. To be eligible, a student must submit a statement of recommendation from a professor or teacher, a four-paragraph essay, and information on current activities in school, volunteer work, and/or employment.
The application may be found on the Conservancy’s website or directly at this link (PDF). The scholarship will be presented at a Conservancy event in May.
Any student who applies must reside in the Lebanon Valley and should be pursuing or planning to pursue a degree in conservation, ecology, natural resources, wildlife management, water resources management, or environmental sciences. High school seniors and college students attending Lebanon Valley College or Harrisburg Area Community College are all welcome to apply.
The award is given in remembrance of two local conservationists, Richard and Karen Light. According to Conservancy Executive Director Laurie Crawford, “the Lights made a great impact on local conservation efforts… They shared their knowledge and love of nature with everyone.
“The scholarship recipient is encouraged to inspire others and carry on their mission,” Crawford added.
Last year, the scholarship was awarded to Palmyra Area High School Senior Jamie Lynn Kantorczyk.
