With help through a grant by the Lebanon Kiwanis Club, the Richland Community Library and ELCO Intermediate School have brought the FeederWatch program to Lebanon County.
The collaboration was organized by Nicholas Wright, K-5 Instructional Coach for STEM; Sarah Warren, Children’s Librarian and Mary Weigley, Library Director.
The FeederWatch program, started by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, teaches students STEM skills such as data collection, data analysis, estimation, and measurement skills.
The library created a feeding area for the Intermedia School and Weigley spent a day with students teaching them about FeederWatch. Another full day program will be presented Dec. 14.
Activity packets are available at the library for students, as well as a display of bird feeding books. To help with the program, donations of bird seed are welcome at the library and can be dropped off during operating hours.
The library hopes that this will be a long collaboration with the school, able to bring the joy of bird feeding to a new generation.
