Have you ever wanted to peek inside a Mount Gretna cottage?
The hundreds of cottages in the hills of Gretna are standing testament to the region’s past as a pleasure playground – a legacy that continues in part today.

This year, for the 36th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes, Gretna Music has assembled a lineup of 10 such cottages (plus four historic buildings) that will open their doors to give visitors a peek at the seldom-seen interiors of these hillside retreats. The tours will be offered Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Starting July 18, tickets for the event can be purchased in advance for $20 at any Stauffers of Kissel Hill locations or the Mount Gretna Visitors Info Center. Tickets can also be purchased online at any time, with a $1.50 processing fee included.
On the day of the tour, participants will check in at the Mount Gretna Post Office or a tent in front of the Mount Gretna Playhouse, where they will leave receive a wristband and map booklet with information about each of the buildings. Day of tickets will also be available at these locations for $25.
Organizers said that the tour will include one “iconic favorite,” a 1903 cottage built by a New York industrialist that was said to have been sketched on the back of a napkin by a famous architect. Wondering who? You’ll have to attend the tour to find out.
The tour will include everything from tiny weekend getaway cottages to modern year-round homes. You’ll also get a look at the unique tree stump foundations of the Gretna area.
In addition to the 10 namesake homes on the tour, four additional historic buildings will be open for inspection, including the Chatauqua’s Hall of Philosophy.
The tour is sponsored by Snitz Creek Cabinet Shop and helps raise funds for the nonprofit Gretna Music, which has been bringing world-class musicians to Central Pennsylvania for nearly 50 years.
