This week, meet Charley!
Charley is 11 years old, the longtime companion of LebTown writer Tom Knapp and his family.
Tom got him when he was 8 months old, when his original owner needed to find him a new home and wanted to avoid the risk of a shelter. He read a column Tom had written about the death of his previous dog, Casey, and thought they’d be a good match.
They were.
This boundless ball of black energy was born after the original owner’s golden retriever, Lucy, ran away and came home after a dalliance with a neighbor’s border collie. While the rest of Lucy’s pups found new homes, Charley (nee George) stayed with Lucy’s owner … but as he got older, his mom didn’t want him around (as is common, I’m told, among female dogs and their male offspring). So a new bond was formed!!
Charley has thrived, both as Tom’s sole companion and, since 2019, as a family dog. A playful spirit, he has a blend of the border collie’s intelligence and the golden retriever’s affable goofiness.
He has also learned to live with other dogs in the house; he currently tolerates his much younger and livelier brother, a pit mix named Finnegan who was rescued through Pitties.Love.Peace.
