The Flags for Heroes celebration is returning to Myerstown for the Fourth of July weekend, following its successful Memorial Day weekend run.

For the eighth year in a row, 200 American flags will be displayed on the back lawn of Frieden’s Lutheran Church along Route 422 as a way to honor living and fallen heroes, who are named on a banner accompanying the flag display.

The free-to-the-public tradition was started by Dennis Dieffenbach as an annual tradition for the Myerstown-ELCO Rotary Club. The flags are now displayed during Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends.

This year’s Memorial Day weekend event featured a new item on the agenda — a special opening ceremony on the morning of Saturday, May 25. The ceremony was created through a partnership between the Myerstown-ELCO Rotary Club and the Myerstown VFW.

“It was very well attended and helped us set a new fundraising goal,” said Dieffenbach of the opening ceremony. “The crowd was excellent, and the event received outstanding media coverage. It has instantly become an annual event.”

Funds raised benefit local first responders. The church is located at 301 W Washington Ave.
